What is Trail Mix:

Trail Mix is a filling, light-weight snack, consisting of bite-sized ingredients that travel well (don’t need refrigerating or heating up). It typically includes nuts, seeds, and dried fruit, all tossed together, but you can play with different ingredients to pep it up (like unsalted popcorn or toasted oats).

Is Trail Mix healthy:

Trail mix offers a lot of great nutrients, including good fats (cholesterol lowering and therefore heart-friendly), lots of protein (muscle building), fiber (again cholesterol-lowering, and good for digestion), and disease-fighting antioxidants. But you should follow some guide-lines when you snack on it:

Don'ts

  • Candied fruit

  • Added sugar

  • Empty fillers like pretzel bits

Do's:

  • Make your own – and if you don’t have the time, check the labels.

  • Portion Control! Adjust your trail mix intake to your activity level. The fats in trail mix might be healthy but they are also high in calories.

Recipe

(makes 20)

  • 100 g Oats

  • 150 g Trail Mix (50 g Nuts | 50 g Seeds | 50 g Dried Fruit)

  • 30 - 40 g Dark or Raw Chocolate Nibs

  • 50 g Desiccated Coconut

  • 2 TBSP Chia Seeds

  • 50 g Almond, Cashew or Peanut Butter

  • 30-40 g Maple Syrup, Agave Syrup or Honey

  • Pinch of Sea Salt

Mix the oats, trail mix, chocolate and desiccated coconut in a food processor until you reach your desired coarseness.

Add the nut butter, syrup, chia seeds and sea salt to your mix and process until you have sticky dough.

Roll out into bite size balls and coat them in some desiccated coconut and cocoa powder if you like. Put them in an airtight container and let them set for at least 30 minutes in the fridge.

They keep up to 5 days in the fridge or can be frozen.
